Boy Scouts of America

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Boy Scouts of America have established a partnership for the purpose of implementing educational collaboration and programs that empower and enhance the quality of life for our youth.

How does Alpha Phi Alpha Benefit?

• Scouting is another program, like “Go to High School, Go to College”, that local chapters can use to help local youths engage with their communities. It also helps them develop pride in their heritage.• It’s a practical way for Alphas to empower their communities, build future leaders, and recruit possible future Alpha men.• Positive impact on the community, specifically young men, can learn from and be influenced by the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Getting Started

Once a chapter agrees to charter (sponsor) a Scout unit such as a Cub Scout pack, Boy Scout troop, Venturing crew, or Exploring post, the chapter should appoint a chartered organization representative (usually a chapter officer) to serve as a liaison between the chapter and the BSA unit. The chartered organization representative should then contact the Chief Scout Executive at the local BSA council to discuss the organization of a new unit. Both the Alpha Phi Alpha Boy Scout Committee and your local BSA council have volunteers available to assist your chapter in organizing your Scout unit.

Mission Statement

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Scout Oath

On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

Scout Law

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Why Scouting?

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) instills youth with values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Scouting’s programs and activities help youth to fulfill their potential in academics, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has designated the BSA as one of its national initiatives, with Scouting serving as an established youth development program resource.

Operating A Scouting Unit

The charted organization (your Alpha Phi Alpha chapter) owns each of its Scouting units (Cub Scout pack, Boy Scout troop, Venturing crew, or Explorer posts or clubs). As the chartered organization, your chapter uses Scouting to reach out to youth, helping them to make positive life choices.Chartered organizations select the unit’s leadership, provide/facilitate a meeting place, and guide the unit program. Most local councils provide several activities to earn money to cover the cost of program supplies and equipment. Either the unit or the chartered organization (the Alpha Phi Alpha chapter) pays the annual charter fee. The youth and adult members of the unit normally pay their own registration fees; however, some councils have Scoutreach programs to help offset some of these fees.

Volunteer Recognition

Alpha Phi Alpha’s Good Turn Service Award is a distinguished award presented to active and registered members of both Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Boy Scouts of America who implement the Scouting program while promoting, supporting, and strengthening the relationship between the two organizations. The Scouting Service Award recognizes outstanding service by an adult or organization for their demonstrated involvement in the development and implementation of Scouting opportunities for youth in rural or low-income urban backgrounds.
