Scouting America

Scouting America

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Scouting America have forged a partnership to facilitate educational collaboration and programs that empower and improve the quality of life for our youth. Through this alliance, the two organizations are realizing their objectives by leveraging the Scouting program to its fullest potential as a programming resource.

How does Alpha Phi Alpha Benefit?

• Scouting is another program, like “Go to High School, Go to College”, that local chapters can use to help local youths engage with their communities. It also helps them develop pride in their heritage.
• It’s a practical way for Alphas to empower their communities, build future leaders, and recruit possible future Alpha men.
• Positive impact on the community, specifically young men, can learn from and be influenced by the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Getting Started

Once a chapter agrees to sponsor a Scout unit, such as a Cub Scout pack, Scouts BSA troop, Venturing crew, Sea Scout Ship, or an Exploring post, it should designate a chartered organization representative, usually a chapter officer, to act as a liaison between the chapter and the Scouting America unit. This representative should then contact the Scout Executive at the local Scouting America council to discuss establishing a new unit. Both the Alpha Phi Alpha Scouting America Committee and your local council have volunteers ready to help your chapter organize your Scout unit.

  1. The unit steering committee has been appointed. The chapter designates a committee of three to five members responsible for organizing the Scouting unit.
  2. The new unit organizing committee convenes to review the goals and methods of Scouting and begins the process of selecting leaders.
  3. Key leaders are chosen, and the chapter designates a member to the chartered organization representative. This individual will serve as the chapter's representative at the district and council levels and is a voting member on that board. The organization committee recruits and appoints people to serve as the unit committee chair and committee members.
  4. The unit leader and assistants are chosen. The steering committee identifies the individuals who would be suitable as unit leaders.
  5. The paperwork is finished. All applications and other documents are correctly filled out and submitted to the local Scouting representative.
  6. Leaders undergo training soon after agreeing to take on the role. The organizing committee arranges relevant classes to help them better understand their duties. New leaders are typically scheduled for Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) for Troops or BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) training for Cub units.
  7. Youth are recruited, and parents are oriented. Youth and their parents from the community are invited to participate.
  8. Please consult with a member of the Fraternity’s General Scouting America Committee to locate the Scouting America Council in your area. Your local Scout District Executive can offer valuable support to help ensure your unit's success.

Mission Statement

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.

The mission of Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices throughout their lives by instilling the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Scout Oath

“On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”

Scout Law

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Why Scounting?

Scouting America teaches young people the values in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Its programs and activities support youth in achieving their potential in academics, self-confidence, ethics, leadership, and citizenship. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has recognized Scouting America as a key national initiative, utilizing Scouting as a proven resource for youth development.

Operating A Scounting Unit

Your Alpha Phi Alpha chapter, as the chartered organization, owns all its Scouting units, including Cub Scout packs, Scouts BSA troops, Venturing crews, Sea Scout ships, and Explorer posts or clubs. By serving as a chartered organization, your chapter utilizes Scouting to connect with youth and support them in making positive life decisions. The chapter is responsible for choosing the unit’s leadership, providing or arranging a meeting place, and guiding the program.

Most local councils offer various activities to raise funds for program supplies and equipment. Either the unit or the chartered organization (such as the Alpha Phi Alpha chapter) pays the annual charter fee. Usually, youth and adult members pay their own registration fees; however, some councils have Scoutreach programs to help reduce these fees.

National Scouting America Leadership Committee

The Alpha Phi Alpha General Scouting America Committee oversees the fraternity’s Scouting programs. Committee members serve as resources for chapters looking to start or strengthen Scout units and can support your chapter at every stage of organizing or expanding a Scout unit.
