August Alpha News Update
Brothers, it is with a heavy heart that we find ourselves at another moment where Louisiana suffers another tragedy of major flooding. We appreciate the offers of support and ongoing concern for the brothers of Louisiana.There have been many reports of displaced brothers made to the southwestern region vice president, but thankfully no deaths. However, we will continue to maintain contact with the Louisiana district director, Brother Keith Dillon, as well as the Baton Rouge area director, Brother Alvin Cavalier to determine the type of response or outreach needed. At this time, there have been no requests made for supplies as they are still assessing the damage. Our general president has also made contact with the local brothers to offer support.
Additionally, as this weather continues to make its way across this country into other regions, we will reach out to our regional vice presidents to decide whether our assistance is needed in a greater capacity. Please continue to be safe and remember that we are our brothers’ keepers.
GENERAL OFFICE CLOSED FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND
Alpha’s General Office will be closed for the Labor Day weekend on Friday, September 2nd. The General Office will reopen Tuesday, September 6th. Thank you for your understanding.

BROTHER BROWN NAMED POLICE CHIEF
Brother Gregory Brown, a captain with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), has been selected as the new town of Leesburg chief of police, according to an announcement by Town Manager Kaj Dentler. Alpha South Leadership Institute Develops Area Youth
Henderson’s Rho Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity sponsored 21 area youths as they participated in the 2016 Alpha South Leadership Institute at Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia.
The purpose of Leadership Development Citizenship Education Institute is rooted in the mission of Alpha Phi Alpha to “develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.” For more than 38 years, the institute has served as an incubator for future scholars, accomplished professionals, and community leaders. More than 150 student essays were submitted as part of the application process

Remembering Brother Stuart Scott on His 51st Birthday
His unique style of blending hip hop with sports broadcasting changed the sports landscape forever.
Scott grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, although he was born in Chicago, Illinois. He lived in Chicago until he was 8 years old. In high school, Scott was captain of his football team, ran track, was student body vice president and was a part of the Key Club.
In 1987, Scott graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Bachelors of Arts degree in speech communication. Scott was also a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Early in Scott’s career, he worked as a news reporter and sports anchors for.
Brother Motley Enters Omega Chapter
Raymond Motley, [Gamma Phi ’60] 80 years old, died July 5.
