2020 SPECIAL EVENT NEW PROTOCOLS

Our insurance policy has dramatically changed and that necessitates a change in operational procedures for how we manage and approve insurance requests.  Starting Tuesday, January 21st there will be a new Special Events Checklist form posted to the fraternal website. Any event that takes place on or after March 15, 2020 will be required to use this form to obtain insurance approvals. Even if you already have confirmation and a certificate issued you will need to reapply for insurance coverage.  There are no exceptions!

For events taking place prior to March 15th, the Corporate Risk Management, Education and Prevention Committee along with the appropriate Corporate Staff Members will conduct a risk assessment of your activity. You may be required to obtain additional insurance in order for the event to be approved.  

Additionally, moving forward insurance submissions must be made THIRTY (30) days in advance of the date of the event. Any requests inside that window will not only incur the $100 penalty but they will also need to be approved by your Regional Risk Management Officer (RMO) or the Chair of the Corporate Risk Management, Education and Prevention Committee.  Regional Risk Management officers can require additional conditions be met prior to the approval of your event.  The contact information for your Regional RMO's has been posted on the fraternal website.  Additionally, if you have questions about best practices as it relates to specific types of activities, the committee chairs have been made available to you as resources for consultation.

Brothers, we realize that this is a difficult and abrupt transition but the risk is literally too high for us to ignore the potential consequences. We must change the way we operate to meet the requirements of our insurance carrier. That change starts now. Please know that we are available to you to answer questions and address concerns.  As always, we are operating with the best of intentions as the preservation of our organization is at stake.  Let us know how we can help you be successful during this transition.

Our insurance carrier just notified the Fraternity on Monday, Dec. 30 regarding some important changes to our event insurance coverage, effective Jan. 1, 2020. These changes must be adhered to or your event will not be covered. Please read them closely and carefully. See below.

No Coverage Applies If Events Conditions Not Met

With respect to any “event”, as a condition precedent to any rights any insured may have under this insurance, you must comply with all of the conditions enumerated in A. 1. through 8. below. -You agree that we need not prove any prejudice to us as a result of your failure to comply with any of the below conditions in order to enforce those conditions precedent to coverage.

If prior to the commencement of any “event” you fail to comply with the below conditions, any claim or “suit” related in whole or in part to an “event” that directly or indirectly gives rise to the claim or “suit” will not be covered under this insurance. We will have no obligation to either defend or indemnify any insured for any “claim” or “suit” brought against any insured.

You hereby warrant and agree that you will comply with all of the following conditions prior to the commencement of such “event”:

1. A “Special Event Checklist” will be completed and signed by your President, Event

Chairman and, if applicable, Advisor; and

2. The “Special Event Checklist” will be submitted to and approved by your Corporate

Headquarters in the form of an Event Certificate; and

3. Any applicable checklist or application fee will be paid in full; and

4. If the “event” is held at a location not owned by you, you will execute a signed agreement with the host venue lessor to lease the event space. The host venue lessor must have “adequate insurance”, and such “adequate insurance” will be evidenced by a Certificate of Insurance issued to you; and

5. All alcoholic beverages will be sold, served and/or furnished by a licensed server with

“adequate Liquor Liability insurance”, and such “adequate Liquor Liability insurance” is

will be evidenced by a Certificate of Insurance issued to you; and

6. Any security guard service or personnel hired for the “event” will have “adequate insurance” and such “adequate insurance” will be evidenced by a Certification of Insurance issued to you; and

7. Any third party promoter hired for the “event” will have “adequate insurance” and such “adequate insurance” will be evidenced by a Certification or Insurance issued to you; and

8. In the event of an “occurrence”, offense, claim or “suit”, you and any other involved insured must immediately send us copies of all “Special Event Checklists”, Event Certificates, contracts, agreements and Certificates of Insurance directly or indirectly related to the claim or “suit”.

This communication is being sent as an update regarding the migration of the AlphaNET database to our new system and site.

As of Sunday, December 15, 2019 at 11:59 pm EST, AlphaNET was no longer accessible. In a previous email dated Monday, November 18th, we requested that all Brothers ensure their information in AlphaNET was up to date AND correct by Sunday, December 1, 2019, to include emails, social security numbers, home addresses, phone numbers, and chapter initiation & current affiliations are correct. Brothers were also to ensure that spelling of their names were correct.

Currently, you will not be afforded the opportunity to update any information, since the database migration is well underway.

In addition, please know that we will still be able to receive payments for individual grand tax, chapter tax, or donations of any kind by calling us directly during at (800) 373-3089 during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday until Thursday, January 2, 2020 at the close of business. Afterwards, NO MORE transactions will be accepted under any circumstances.

If you had planned to complete a life membership application, no further applications for life membership will be entertained until after Tuesday, January 21, 2020, when the new system will be fully entrenched and used for invoicing.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.® Congratulates Brother Ted Colbert as New President and CEO of Boeing Global Services

The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. congratulates Brother Ted Colbert for being named president and CEO of Boeing Global Services. In addition, he is the executive vice president of Boeing, and a member of the Boeing Executive Council.

“Brother Colbert’s promotion is a major achievement and distinction for both himself and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.,” said General President Dr. Everett B. Ward. “Whether in the corporate boardroom or on the social justice battlefield, Alpha men continue to realize our mission of developing leaders by accepting the mantle of leadership. Brother Colbert is yet another example of Alpha men who rise to that level of corporate excellence.”

Last weekend, Gamma Lambda chapter awarded Brother Colbert, a Fall 2003 Gamma Lambda initiate, its Centennial Corporate Leadership Award at its gala.

The former chief information officer (CIO) and senior vice president of Information Technology & Analytics, he succeeds Stan Deal, who was named the CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

In that prior role, Brother Colbert oversaw all aspects of information technology, information security, data and analytics. He also supported the growth of Boeing’s business through IT- and analytics-related revenue generating programs.

When he joined Boeing in 2009, he led the IT Business Systems organization where he managed the computing application systems that support Boeing Finance, Human Resources, Corporate and Commercial Capital Business Units, as well as the company’s internal systems.

He later led the company’s Information Technology Infrastructure organization, where he was responsible for developing and maintaining network, computing, server, storage, collaboration and infrastructure solutions across the enterprise.

The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Council of Presidents of the National Pan Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) are encouraging our Brothers and Sisters to support the inspirational and impactful major motion picture, Harriet – in theaters nationwide Friday, Nov. 1.

Harriet (portrayed by Cynthia Erivo), is the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes, whose courage, ingenuity, and tenacity free hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history.  The film, directed by Kasi Lemmons and produced by Deborah Martin-Chase, also stars Leslie Odom, Jr., and Joe Alwyn.

Fraternity Members Pay Tribute to Legendary Alpha Brother and Congressman Ron Dellums

WASHINGTON – As part of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s historic inaugural Alpha Days on the Hill, the Fraternity announced its new national civic engagement program, one of its Members of Congress introduced legislation recognizing the first African American professional Senate Committee staff person and paid tribute to the late Alpha Brother and Congressman Ron Dellums this week.

This week, more than 100 Alpha brothers participated in the Alpha Days on the Hill, held in conjunction with the National Urban League’s State of Black America Summit from May 6 through May 8, which also uniquely featured Alpha Members of Congress as well as Alpha National Urban League and Alpha United Negro College Fund leadership. Among them, Congressmen Brothers Al Green, Robert C. “Bobby” Scott and Steven Horsford as well as 31st Past General President Harry E. Johnson, who is also a National Urban League Trustee, and Brother Dr. Michael Lomax, UNCF President and CEO participated in the issues forum and discussed pertinent legislation.

In addition, Alpha leadership and brothers met with members of the Congressional Black Caucus, other Members of Congress, staff and NUL CEO Brother Marc Morial about legislative issues of concern.

“Brother Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stated that ‘Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter,’” said President Ward. “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will not be silent on things that matter, and we will continue to be the leading voice for the voiceless.”

General President Dr. Everett B. Ward announced the Fraternity’s new national civic engagement program at its Issues forum on Wednesday, which will encompass efforts to address voter’s rights protections, critical legislation advocacy, and census integrity.

“Secure The Vote,” which partners with the NAACP, the National Urban League, and other members of the Divine Nine will combat organized voter suppression strategically directed towards African American voters and other people of color; “Alpha Phi Alpha: Advocacy In Action” specifically advocates for state and federal legislation that: protects the right to vote, ensures access to quality education, provides affordable healthcare, and offers an adequate minimum wage for working Americans; and lastly, “I Am Counted,” which utilize social media, door to door canvassing, and a national media campaign to ensure African American citizens and other people of color are counted during the 2020 Census.

President Ward also added that the Fraternity would also support the United Negro College Fund’s top priorities for Historically Black Colleges & Universities, which include a strong Executive Order on HBCUs, fully funding Title III for HBCU programs, federal student aid reform, HBCU facilities and infrastructure investment, funding for new HBCU Centers of Innovation for National Needs as well as repeal and reform of burdensome higher education regulations under its advocacy component.

Other brothers, Congressmen Gregory Meeks, Danny Davis as well as Bobby Scott joined the Alpha contingent on the steps of the Capitol for an historic photo.

Earlier that day, Alpha Brother Congressman Scott introduced legislation to honor the life and legacy of Jewel Brother Robert Harold Ogle, who was the first professional African American Senate Committee staffer. According to Senate records, he was originally hired in 1919 as a “laborer” for the Senate Appropriations Committee, then as a “messenger” in 1921 and finally an “additional clerk” in 1930.

“It is important that we honor Jewel Ogle, who a century ago, paved the way for African American congressional staffers today,” said Brother Scott. “He established and exemplified the ideals of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in leadership, scholarship, and service . . . As members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity visit the United States Capitol this week for Alpha Days on the Hill with a commitment to “Advocacy and Action,” Jewel Ogle’s “fighting spirit” goes with them, as well as with each of the Members of Congress who are proud members of this fraternity.”

On Friday, members of the Fraternity held its ‘Omega Service’ tribute for legendary Alpha Brother and Congressman Ron Dellums, who died last July. Dellums’ career in politics spanned over 40 years as a Berkeley City Councilman, U.S. Congressman and Oakland, Ca. mayor. The 11-term Congressman and chairman of the House Armed Services Committee was known for his outspoken anti-war stances and was the one of the foremost Anti-Apartheid advocates beginning as early as 1972.

Brother Dellums opposed every major American military intervention, except for emergency relief in Somalia in 1992, and his fight against Apartheid eventually led to his legislation finally being passed 14 years later, which called for sanctions against South Africa and immediate divestment by American corporations. While President Reagan vetoed the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986, that veto was overridden – the first the first override in the 20th century of a presidential foreign policy veto. Brother Dellums, whose fight against apartheid in South Africa was the subject of a Disney Channel made-for-TV film, The Color of Friendship released in 2000, was also a member of the Fraternity’s World Policy Council, a think-tank whose purpose is to expand the fraternity’s involvement in politics, as well as analyze social, domestic and international policy concerns.

The 2018 midterm elections are fast approaching and pose a critical impact on the future of our communities. This is all about the Urgency of NOW and Alpha Advocacy In Action!

Over the past few months, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has been deeply involved and engaged in voter registration, voter education and voter engagement activities under our national program, A Voteless People Is A Hopeless People” as well as our First of All, We Vote” initiative.

Recently, we launched our VOTER OPERATION I.C.E. 2018 that addresses voter engagement activities that focuses on how our communities should Inform, Collaborate, and Execute in anticipation of the midterm elections. Continued to follow our official social media platforms for more on this engagement.

In addition, the Fraternity is also collaborating with the National Urban League, the NAACP as well as our brothers and sisters of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), affectionately referred to as the “Divine Nine,” in multiple efforts and campaigns to ensure our communities voter turnout reshapes the future socio-political climate in this nation.

Next week, U.S. Congressman James (Jim) Clyburn, D-SC, is asking that members of the Divine Nine assist in raising awareness to increase African American voter turnout across the country through the following ways:

  • Vote early so that you can assist and engage on Election Day.
  • Encourage and assist the elderly or relatives and friends, who may require assistance to vote early or take them to vote absentee in person.
  • Join chapter members in your D-9 paraphernalia to canvass on election day.
  • Post and share The Divine Nine Week of Action graphic on social media and post in your neighborhoods, places of worship and campuses. See Below.

  • Volunteer to assist with Get Out the Vote efforts in your state, county, or municipality on Election Day.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. donated $10,000 to support the independent, tuition-free Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys, which serves children from traditionally underserved communities in the South East Washington, D.C. area.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. donated $10,000 to support the independent, tuition-free Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys, which serves children from traditionally underserved communities in the Washington, D.C. area during yesterday’s public presentation.

The Fraternity’s Oct. 22nd donation, which underscores Alpha’s commitment to urban communities, is aligned with its national program, Go-To-High-School, Go-To-College – established in 1922 and concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. Through the Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College educational initiative, young men receive information and learn strategies that facilitate success.

“Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is committed to the uplift and education of our youth, especially for African American males,” said Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. 35th General President Everett B. Ward. “Throughout the Fraternity’s history, we have consistently provided support for institutions and initiatives that solidify our commitment to the community. Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys is ensuring that our boys are challenged to reach their full academic potential and prepared for future leadership and service in their communities and we are grateful for the opportunity to support.”

According to its website, the school, which strives to alter the educational and social trajectory of children from traditionally underserved communities, seeks to foster a love of learning, intellectual curiosity, spiritual foundation, and moral character that each boy will need as a student, as a citizen and as a child of God.

“We’re really excited that the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha (Fraternity, Inc.) gave a very generous donation to the Bishop Walker School,” said James Woody, chief development officer for the school. “(Since) the Bishop Walker is a tuition-free school, we’re always open to financial contributions, but we’re also interested in having men of color come down and be positive role models for our students.”

The school, which receives no public funding and covers all expenses through donations and contributed services, is named for the first African American Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, the Rt. Reverend John Thomas Walker, who was “a pastor, teacher, cathedral builder, civil rights leader, ecumenist, social justice pioneer, urban missionary, relief worker and statesman” and welcomes boys of all faiths and beliefs. Currently, Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys, which is located in Southeast D.C., serves Junior-Kindergarten through Sixth grade and is expanding to 8th grade by 2020 when its total enrollment reaches 160 students.

Statement on Hazing Allegations

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tyler Hilliard, a student at the University of California – Riverside. “The Fraternity shares our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and the entire university community, as their loss is unimaginable,” said Executive Director Jamie R. Riley.

Working with the University, the Fraternity has launched an investigation into the situation and has placed the chapter on an immediate cease and desist status, suspending all activities. The Fraternity is cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities as they investigate.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. does not condone and strictly prohibits any illegal acts, including hazing in any form, whether physical or mental, as a term or condition of membership in the organization. Any member found violating the fraternity’s anti-hazing policy will be immediately suspended with a recommendation for expulsion.

To be clear, any individual found to have participated in or knowingly allowed any hazing activity or any illegal act does not support the mission, vision, or aims of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has taken several steps in efforts to prevent and eliminate hazing. As an advocate, supporter, and participant in hazing prevention initiatives with organizations like Hazingprevention.org, the Novak Institute, and the Greek Anti-Hazing Hotline, Alpha Phi Alpha is educating members and those who are interested in membership about this issue. The following provides a snapshot of current anti-hazing efforts:

  1. All chapters must receive state, regional, and national approval before engaging in sanctioned new member activities. All active members of the Fraternity are required to attend an annual immersive risk-management, anti-hazing training before participating in sanctioned new member activities. This training provides very detailed information regarding the Fraternity’s anti-hazing policies, an overview of applicable laws, and engages members in case studies about eradicating hazing culture.
  2. All new member applicants are guided through the Fraternity’s anti-hazing policies as part of membership application process.
  3. During the Fraternity’s international, regional, and state conventions, active members of the Fraternity are required to attend additional in person anti-hazing trainings.
  4. Each of the five regions of the Fraternity’s membership host a College Brothers Leadership Retreat, where anti-hazing education and training are the primary components of the core curriculum.
  5. The Fraternity has a long-standing partnership with HazingPrevention.Org, and most recently participated in an intense three-day national anti-hazing institute, where members learned about the root cause of hazing and developed strategic approaches to eradicating hazing culture.
  6. The Fraternity has long-standing participation and partnerships with several anti-hazing organizations, including the Fraternal Law Conference, Association of Fraternity & Sorority Advisors (AFA), and the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC).
  7. The Fraternity has several anti-hazing resources available on the national website.
  8. The Fraternity has a National Committee on Risk Management Education and Prevention, which focuses on implementing innovative educational and awareness curriculum and providing cuttingedge recommendations on new anti-hazing policies.
